April 24th- Today we had a guest speak who is Francie Astrom. She is the head dietitian at WellWorks. I found that is it supported partially by wellness funds. Her salary is paid by half the wellness funds and half of the money brought into from the members. The types of services that are at WellWorks is a fitness center, massage, personal trainers, blood pressure, cholesterol screenings. The focus of WellWorks is to provide a wide variety of programming not just fitness. It focuses on keeping members healthy and achieve adaptable health.
April 26th- Today we went over the Ohio Board of Dietetics. We learned that as soon as you get done with your internship you immediately have to practice under your own licenses and not someone else. I also learned that you can make complaints to the Ohio Board of Dietetics that are screened. The purpose of the Ohio Board of Dietetics is to establish standards and responsibilities for Dietitians. It also issues permits and licenses to the dietitian. I hope that one day I will be able to get my licenses and finally become a registered dietitian!

Nutr in the Community
April 17th-We had a guest speaker today who was Nick Claussen who is the community relations coordinator for the department of Athens County job and family services. They help families with getting the money for food assistance so they need to buy groceries they need to get through the month. The food assistance program is designed to raise nutritional levels, to expand buying power and to safeguard the health and well-being of individuals in low-income households in Ohio. They used to be known as Food Stamps. You can qualify for Food Assistance benefits by having a monthly income that is under 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. When being evaluated for Food Assistance they review your rent or mortgage, gas, electric, water, sewer, phone, medical expenses, and payments for child support or care. The role of the nutrition professional would be to educate the families in understanding what is needed to live a healthy diet. Living below the poverty line is sometimes hard to eat the healthy thing that is more expensive. I loved hearing about this great opportunity that people can use that are in need of assistance!
April 19th- Today we went around in a circle and discussed our agency assignments. It was interesting to see how many different agency's there are to help families that are in need. It shows how many people care about other families in need. My agency was Plant a Row for the Hungry which is a great non-profit organization that produced fruits and vegetables for families that are in need of fresh produce.

Nutrition 425
April 10th- Today we talked about Health and Nutrition Policy that is set nationwide to give guidelines to people nutritional needs of the American people. It was interesting to see how these people got their information for this policy. It is gathered by assessment, monitoring, surveillance and screening. We also learned about the policy cycle which starts with the problem and leads to formulating alternatives and then the policy is adopted and then made implementation on how to fix the problem and then it is evaluated to see if the policy is approved or it can also be terminated. I found it very fascinating how a policy is evaluated to see if it accepted or not.
April 12th- Today we finished talking about Health and Nutrition Policy and watched a movie about a Farmers Market right by Hilton Head Island. It was great to see how all the people came together to help out the community by helping the farmers and the people within the community. The best part of class today was that we watched how a bill was passed through Congress. It was an animated little film that I remembered from grade school. At the end of class, we got into our assessment groups to figure out what needs to be done in the next week. We decided that we would be meeting Sunday night to fill out the notebook and discuss more about what we will be planting in the future!

Nutrition in the Community
April 3rd- Today we met Meghan at the Community Gardens. She showed us where our plot was located and where the water and tools were to start our weeding and planting. It was interesting to see everyone different plots that were out there and how everyone had different methods to planting in the different plots. After Meghan was done talking, we got into our groups to talk about what group we wanted to concentrate with during our project. We also talked about what days we wanted to meet to start the weeding. It was very interesting to see the Garden because I had never been there before.
April 5th- Today were were assigned our agency and assessment project. For my agency project, I am doing Garden Writers Association- Plant a row for the hungry. I feel that it will be interesting to learn for more about this great cause. For our assessment project, our topic that was chosen was children in Appalachia. I feel that it was a great topic to chose due to the fact that children are our future. We also got into our assessment groups to talk about what plants we think we should begin planting. Overall, I felt that today we accomplished a lot during class time.
